A desire for change drove Sean and Mary to board the train west.

A lack of money was why they hid their children in a cattle car instead of paying their fare.

As the children said later, travelling in a cattle car stinks...

However, the family made it to Austin.

Only to find themselves struggling to adjust to life on their new homestead.

That first winter was especially harsh.

Especially with the attentions of jealous Mister Brown, who worked tirelessly to frustrate their efforts to establish a successful farm.

It's amazing how hard some people will work to stop other people from working, isn't it?

Little did the McConnells realize at the time that they and their descendants would witness the efforts of the Honourable Walter Clifford to establish the village of Austin...the great fire that tried to destroy it...and the grand vision of Donald Corruthers to establish the Manitoba Agricultural Museum...

Who could have guessed all the things that were yet to come?

Both the story of a growing family and the story of a vigorous community, Our Town, Austin is a play that celebrates 150 years of Austin Manitoba in a most dramatic way.

*Based on stories of Austin's history as told by Austin area seniors...

To be performed in Austin as part of Austin's 150th Celebrations.

Christmas Choir

A special project for Christmas...Christmas Choir will feature a one-act play performed in partnership with the Highway 50 Players...and also music from an actual Christmas Choir provided by Gladwest Rec...come out and get into the Christmas Spirit...

Christmas Choir

by Pat Cook

The Christmas choir has never sounded worse! Perhaps it’s because of a lack of talent or not enough rehearsals... or it could be because the choir members aren’t sincere in their reasons for being there. Dede is trying to drum up votes for the next city council election while Laraine just wants to get out of the house and away from her large, loud family. George is always trying to sell insurance while Phoebe is trying to catch the eye of choir director, Michael, whom she simply adores. Not even Ron, the photographer, can get them to cooperate! Fast lines fly in this zany send-up of human nature — some hilarious, some poignant — with each character getting his or her moment in the spotlight... literally! The good-hearted volunteer choir director thinks the only way to get someone to bless this group is if they all sneezed at the same time! If even the director has no faith, then what’s in store for this motley crew of would-be singers? Find out how a young preacher helps the choir find harmony and the true meaning of Christmas in this fast-paced Christmas comedy. Produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Publishing Co.

Spring 2016-Our First Show for Children (of all ages)

Happily Forever After

Snow White, Cinderella, and Goldilocks all got their happy endings. But happily-ever-after isn’t quite what the gals imagined it would be. It’s just TOO happy with all the helpfulness, charm, and generosity of their adoring princes! While they are busy planning ways to bring a bit more normalcy into their lives, another princess is hoping to find her own happy ending. Princess Wallflower is considering many suitors, but she only wants the handsomest of them all. When the vile, scheming Bad Bart kidnaps her, the princess is initially impressed by his handsomeness and agrees to marry him. So much for first impressions! Once she realizes he’s bad (after all, it’s in his name), she begins to hope a handsome prince will come to her rescue. Of course, all the princes in the kingdom are out searching for her, including the hubbies of Snow White, Cinderella and Goldilocks. This gives the ladies a chance to get back to normal. And what lucky suitor shall win the hand of the beautiful Princess Wallflower? In an ironic twist with a nice message to boot, it might just be Bernard the Beast. Produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Publishing Co.

A Little Christmas Spirit

By Pat Cook

J. D. Morse has been looking high and low for a special Christmas gift for his grandson. Finally, as a last resort, he wanders into Nick's Emporium, an old-fashioned store chock full of all sorts of gifts and knickknacks. He has a hard time explaining to Nick what he's looking for, but finds himself falling under the old storekeeper's spell. Just when Morse is about to buy something, he runs to the street to chase kids away from his car. When he returns, he finds the store suddenly dark and quiet. A policeman then shows up to run him off because, "This place ain't been open in forty years!" Morse finds a way back, not only to the store but to a time years ago when he was a younger man. The Great Gladstone Oil Strike!

Posted by Kelvin on June 26, 2015 at 2:35 PM Comments comments (0)

"Oil Excitement!" Inspired by this headline, Neville Neverdowell, a smooth talking lawyer from Toronto, decides to court Prudence Wilson, heir to the Brickyard where the oil was found. Will Neville rush the relationship faster than prudent? Will Prudence sign away her late father's brickyard in a desperate attempt to avoid a honeymoon in Toronto? Just when all seems lost, Jezebel Jones, the world famous actress of melodrama, steps in to save the day, and also offers Dudley Do-right, a love struck boy from Plumas, some valuable advice. Boy, if you want to become a man, do something! Will Dudley ever do anything to win over Prudence, the only woman he has ever loved? More importantly, if he ever does do something, will he do something right? Is it even possible that someone from Gladstone could ever love someone from Plumas? Find out in this dramatic one-act play that blends comedy with little known historical facts from the early days of Gladstone and area.

*Fact: In the early 1900s Gladstone was known as an arts community with many concerts and plays performed. Residents of Gladstone would even travel to surrounding communities (as far north as Glenella) to perform.

*Fact: The Great Gladstone Oil Strike! is set to be performed at the General Store during the Austin Thresherman's Reunion, July 22, 23, 24 and at the Gladstone Museum on August 7 during The Gladstone Fair Days. Showtimes 7:30 p.m.

"The Great Gladstone Oil Strike! was inspired by the history of Gladstone and the stories told by local seniors. The story itself and the characters are fictional however the historical references are accurate.

At one time the provincial school-board did indeed frown on marriage for female teachers. There was a rivalry between Gladstone and Plumas. There was someone who used gunpowder to deal with firewood thieves. And yes, there was actually a time in 1906 when some people thought Gladstone and Neepawa would have to amalgamate because of an oil strike in Magnus Wilson's Brickyard.

*Note: The heroic incident described as taking place in Arden actually happened to Alfred Reilly of Arden instead of Magnus Wilson of Gladstone as described in the play. My own Father did something similar. I guess that is one reason why Alfred Reilly's story resonated with me and why I wanted to include it. May the example of great men from the past inspire people of the present to do right...maybe even people like Dudley Doright."-Kelvin

Special thanks to: Frank Weber, Fred Tester, and Catherine Smith for stories of the early days of Gladstone.

Plans for 2015

The Treasure of Shiver River-Spring 2015

This is the freshest old-fashioned mellerdramer we’ve seen, and it’s laugh out loud funny, to boot! All the traditional plot elements are here. From the nasty scoundrel Rod Enreel, who will soon take over the Shiver River Ranch and find the hidden treasure if Colonel Sanders can’t sell his cattle to come up with the mortgage money, to heroic Marshal Marshall Law, who would love to propose to Heidi Claire, the colonel’s daughter, yet he can’t. And yes, there’s always the vile option for Heidi to marry the black-hearted villain, though he only plans to do her in and abscond with the treasure and his romance novel-loving partner-in-crime, Paige Turner. Ah, but did we mention that our villain doesn’t have a good evil laugh and has to appoint an Evil Laugher from the audience? Or that Marshal and Heidi wonder curiously why they hear romantic music every time they’re in a scene together? Both your cast and your audience will love all the show-stealing roles, such as a pirate queen, a semi-reformed female gambler and an auctioneer who’s tricked into thinking he’s a dog by a con artist with as many accents as the United Nations.

Produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service Inc., Englewood, Colorado

The Story of the Play

“Christmas! Utter rot and nonsense.” Only one man would say such a thing, and we all know him by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge. This traditional reworking of the classic Dickens tale presents some new faces alongside the familiar to awaken the spirit of the most stubborn miser known to Victorian fiction. As we all know, the lonely, penny-pinching London businessman cares little for his fellow man — until a dark visit from his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley, gives him an ominous warning. In his journey with three spirits, Scrooge revisits the joys and sorrows of his past, including what might have been his last chance at love. His visions of the present show how his actions affect not only his own well-being, but also the joy and well-being of those around him. But it is the vision of the future that holds Ebenezer’s hardest lessons, revealing a terrible fate for himself and those he now cares about if he does not change his ways. Rediscover the magic of A Christmas Carol in this beautifully written adaptation, complete with a hardy dose of comedy to accompany Scrooge’s heartwarming transformation!
